Circular economy: Recycling winter boat shrink wrap covers

CAE Rive-Nord is very happy to be partnering with the SADC des Laurentides on this major project to recover boat shrink wrap covers, led by Synergie Économique Laurentides (SEL) as part of the Virage Vert program. Synergie has provided the CAE and the SADC des Laurentides with a progress report showing that the initiative is off to an encouraging start.

After the second and latest collection of boat covers in Argenteuil on June 21, SEL can confirm that the project has been a success. The objectives set for the four collection sites were met. More than 300 covers were recovered from all collections, equalling nearly 3 tonnes of material in the Argenteuil RCM alone.

The CAE joins Synergie Économique Laurentides in thanking the project’s participants:

• Mario Laurin and Jean-Marc of Mario Marine (one storage site in Lachute and another in Brownsburg-Chatham)
• Éric Larose of Marina Mariposa
• Steve Teasdale of Service Nautique Teasdale

It is important to note that this was the first time that these companies participated in this collection. They were excited about the project from the outset and followed the procedure carefully to obtain high quality plastic material. The recycler informed SEL that it was happy with the quality of plastic covers it received.

Synergie and the CAE would also like to highlight the time and money invested by the three cities involved in this project:

• City of Lachute
• City of Brownsburg-Chatham
• City of Saint-André-d’Argenteuil

There is no doubt that this project can be repeated in the future. The collection route could be expanded to include more businesses and recover more material.

Sustainable benefits for our region

At the end of the summer, we will be able to provide you with the official report on this project for all RCMs involved. We will find out exactly how many tonnes of plastic were diverted from landfills.
